The newly redeveloped Penguin District School on the north-west coast has been officially opened, providing students with the ‘latest and greatest’ learning facilities.
The $20 million project combines primary and secondary campuses onto the existing secondary school site, with a mix of new buildings and upgraded facilities.
Education Minister Jo Palmer said the redevelopment aims to improve the educational experience and accessibility for students and staff.
“The works include a new administration hub, performing arts complex, gymnasium and outdoor play spaces,” she said.
“Community voice was at the forefront of the redevelopment, with extensive stakeholder consultation shaping the accessible spaces, strong connections between indoor and outdoor areas and the specialised learning rooms.”
School Principal Matthew Perry said his staff and students feel “exceptionally privileged” to have the new facility.
“This was something that was almost a bit of a pipe dream about 13 years ago, and it’s great to have actually come to fruition,” he said.
“I’m sure this community will seek the benefits of this new build for years to come.”
Penguin Primary School and Penguin High School amalgamated in 2013.
Redevelopment began in 2020 and was completed in 2023, with students starting the new school year on the new campus in 2023.
The project is part of the state government’s $179 million investment in public education capital works projects across Tasmania.
