A young P-plater from Devonport is facing charges for drink driving and failing to stop after a crash on the Bass Highway overnight.

The 21-year-old was allegedly overtaking a Suzuki Jimny at speed in an Isuzu Dmax ute when the vehicles collided around 9:50pm on Wednesday.

Police say the driver of the Dmax lost control and slammed into the side of the highway, with the Suzuki then crashing into the rear of the ute.

The ute driver and his passenger both fled the scene before police arrived.

The occupants of the Suzuki, a woman and a child, were left with minor injuries.

Officers later tracked down the ute driver at a Devonport address and breathalysed him, with the test returning a reading of 0.139 – 2.78x the legal limit.

As a provisional licence holder, a zero blood alcohol limit applies to the young driver.

He has been banned from driving for 12 months and charged with drink driving, being a driver involved in a crash and failing to stop.
