One of the two new Spirit of Tasmania ferries has embarked on a 2,500km journey to Scotland, leaving the shipyard in Finland where it was built.
Spirit of Tasmania IV set sail from Rauma on Friday for what will be a three-and-a-half-day voyage to Leith in Scotland.
The ferry will remain in Europe for the foreseeable future amidst continuing delays to infrastructure upgrades at the Devonport Port.
It is not expected to be operating in Tasmania until at least 2027 and will likely be leased out to an overseas operator in the meantime.
Ferry operator TT-Line is continuing to look to secure a lease arrangement.
The new ferry will stay in Scotland for a minimum of 30 days.
TT-Line sat a formal agreement with the port will then be signed once the specific needs around ancillary services have been negotiated and agreed to.
The second ship, Spirit of Tasmania V, is slated for completion sometime between early and mid-2025.
