Tasmania is set to welcome a new team of 10 ‘rapid response’ doctors to support communities with struggling general practices around the state.

The Tasmanian Government initiative aims to ensure Tasmanians can see a GP when they need one.

Health Minister Guy Barnett said the team will be based out of Cambridge, Launceston and Latrobe and expects them to be operational by September.

“When Tasmanians need to see a GP, they should be able to see a GP, no matter where in Tasmania they live,” he said.

“The recruitment of these GPs, complemented by our comprehensive suite of investments into GPs, will ensure Tasmanians are receiving the healthcare they deserve.”

According to the Department of Health job listing, the roles have a “level 1” base salary of $210,000, through to “level 11” salary of $288,000 “with further salary increments available”.

As part of the GP Incentive Package, new staff will receive a $100,000 settlement allowance to practice in rural and regional areas of the state.

Funding of up to $250,000 per year is also available to support the ongoing viability of outer-urban, regional and rural GP practices.
