Three mates from Launceston will swing their way across the Bass Strait to represent Tasmania at the X-League Indoor Golf Championship in Victoria later this month.
Jack Tregaskisjago, Adam Ring and Harrison Banks, competing as ‘The Skunks’, qualified as finalists over 24 other Tasmanian teams to compete for the title of the Pacific’s best.
“We’ve played golf outdoors all our lives, competing as juniors, inspired by Tiger Woods,” Tregaskisjago said.
“We want to be the best we can be, so we’re very excited to represent Tasmania and defend the island. It’s a pretty cool thing to be a part of.”
The 12th annual championship will be held in Geelong next week, with the trio competing against teams from Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and New Zealand.
Tregaskisjago said indoor golf has surged in popularity in recent years, with 3.5 million Australians playing some form of the game last year.
“Traditional golf is challenging. In fact, at times a game on the green is a nice way to ruin a good walk,” he said.
“By playing on the [simulators], we don’t have to walk around or look for balls, plus food and beers are right beside us at all times.”
Australia’s booming e-sports industry is predicted to reach $294 billion in revenue this year.
