The Tasmanian Government “won’t support” a public holiday should the Matildas secure a victory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Premier Rockliff has announced.

Football fever has swept the country after the Matildas defeated France on Saturday, earning a spot in the semi-finals.

Around 49,000 people watched the highly tense 120-minute game at Brisbane Stadium, with millions more tuning in on television.

Rockliff said despite backing the team to win, he has to “stand up for small business who would carry the cost of a public holiday”.

“I will be the first to cheer on the Matildas along with every Tasmanian on Wednesday night,” Rockliff said.

“But our small businesses should not have to lose trading, lose income and carry the cost of a public holiday.”

“Our small businesses are the first to sponsor and support our grassroots and elite sports, and it’s too much to expect them to shoulder this cost too.”

The Premier said the decision also took into account the impact of a short-notice public holiday on schools and families.

Michael Bailey, the CEO of the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been critical on the idea of a Matilda’s public holiday.

Speaking to Leon Compton on ABC Radio Hobart this morning, Bailey deemed the concept “the most stupid idea going,” talking about his concerns of the logistical issues it would create, particularly the short notice that would be given and the resulting impact on businesses – including the requirement to pay penalty rates.

The Wednesday night semi-final against England will be livestreamed on the big screens at Princes Wharf No 1 in Hobart, UTAS Stadium in Launceston and Devonport’s Market Square from 7pm.

Viewers are encouraged to secure a spot by arriving before kick-off at 8pm.
