Associate Professor Penny Blomfield, a renowned gynaecological oncologist, has been named the 2025 Senior Australian of the Year for Tasmania.
Blomfield’s career has been dedicated to improving the lives of women affected by gynaecological cancers, particularly in rural and remote areas.
In 2000, she became the first female gynaecological oncologist in Tasmania and has since remained at the forefront of medical research and advancements in the field.
As an associate professor at the University of Tasmania, Blomfield has contributed to numerous research studies and regularly provides submissions to government committees and advice to cancer advocacy groups.
Her work has also extended to the national stage, with her appointment to the Cancer Australia Advisory Council in 2018 by the Federal Minister for Health.
Blomfield is known for her passion in addressing the disparities faced by women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer and is a strong advocate for providing the best possible care.
Other nominees included athletics coach Rosemary Coleman, nurse and humanitarian Carol Nagy and retired farmer and volunteer Norman Spurr.
Blomfield will join other state and territory winners at the national Australian of the Year Awards ceremony on January 25, 2025.
