A young P-plater from Longford has been caught speeding for the second time in less than six months, this time at 36km/h over the limit.

The 18-year-old was stopped by police on Cressy Road around 2:50pm on Saturday as he travelled at 96km/h in a 60km/h zone.

The teenager, who can only accumulate a maximum of four demerit points on his licence, will now face a period of disqualification.

“Disappointingly, the same driver was detected travelling at similar high speeds only in November 2024 and clearly hasn’t improved his driving behaviour,” police said.

“During this recent speeding offence, the driver was carrying multiple passengers.”

The incident comes as officers from the Northern Road Policing Unit stopped nine vehicles for speeding, with some drivers exceeding the limit by 24km/h.

“The message from Tasmania Police is simple. Slow down,” a spokesperson said.

“Traveling at excessive speed puts no only yourself at great risk of death or serious injury, but also your passengers and other road users.”
