Heavy rain and floodwater have caused a landslip that has damaged the Lyell Highway north of New Norfolk, forcing authorities to close one lane.

The landslip occurred around 10 kilometres from the town and has significantly impacted the highway, which will require extensive repairs before it can safely handle its usual volume of traffic.

RoadsTas said the section of road will remain under traffic management and will be closely monitored until both lanes can safely be used.

“This is a complex issue that will require further geotechnical investigations before designs for the repairs can be developed and construction can start,” they said.

“We will keep the public informed of our progress, but this may take some time.”

Mayor Michelle Dracoulis said Glenora Road on the opposite side of the River Derwent has been repaired and will remain open “all the way to Bushy Park”.

“Thank you DVC crew and contractors who have been on the job … assessing, patching and filling potholes,” she said.

“[Part of] the Lyell Highway is currently operating with one lane open, pending assessment and repairs.”

The highway beyond Lawitta has also been impacted, but remains open for now.

Floodwaters have receded over further sections of the road towards the West Coast, including near Tarraleah, which was completely submerged by water over the weekend.
