As many as 30 people are believed to have spent the night in a makeshift evacuation centre in the Coles Bay hall, with the only road in and out of the East Coast town remaining closed due to a large bushfire.

Géographe Restaurant in Coles Bay say they will open early this morning with free food and drinks for those in need.

“In light of the unfortunate events within the last 12 hours and the strain and stress of everyone local and surrounding we have decided to open the doors at 7:00am to pull our weight in helping all emergency services,” the restaurant shared.

“We will have FREE soft drink and water for all emergency service workers.”

Over 700 properties are currently without power in the Coles Bay area due to fallen powerlines.

In an update late last night, TFS Acting Regional Chief Greg Butters said firefighters were continuing to battle the blaze – and several others in the region.

“Ground crews, supported by three aircraft, are actively working to bring the bushfire at Coles Bay Road under control,” Butters said.

“Due to the location of the fire, police have closed Coles Bay Road to all traffic.”

“Safer Places are designated at the two boat ramps in Coles Bay and the Freycinet Golf Course.”

“There is an Evacuation Centre set-up at the Swansea Town Hall for people who cannot return home.”

Tasmania Police say Coles Bay Road will remain closed today and will not be open to the general public until a full safety inspection has been completed and hazards removed.
