The Tasmanian Liberal Party is on the hunt for a new State Director after Peter Coulson announced his departure following three years in the role.

Coulson, who joined the part in 2021, said it was the “right time” to move on to a new challenge.

Liberal Party President Michael McKenna thanked Coulson for his service, acknowledging his “record to be proud of” through the 2022 federal election and the 2024 state election.

“Tasmania was the only state to achieve a positive swing to the Liberals [in the 2022 federal election], retaining both Bass and Braddon and only narrowly missing out in Lyons,” he said.

“The Tasmanian campaign review highly commended Pete Coulson’s strategic thinking and professionalism in the face of a significantly challenging political landscape.”

Speculation is growing about Coulson’s potential return to the Queensland Liberals

McKenna also praised Coulson’s leadership in the Liberals’ recent state election victory, saying it was a “critical element” of their success.

“Being State Director is an all-consuming job, and after three years I completely understand Peter’s decision to move on and explore new opportunities.”

Coulson’s last day will be November 22nd.

The party will now begin the search for a successor, with some speculating that Coulson could return to the Liberals in Queensland – who are tipped to take power after this weekend’s state election.

His departure comes amid internal party pressure over the expulsion of long-time member and current Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley, with several members having resigned in protest.
