The Huon Valley Council is facing an unexpected expense of $30,000 this year due to increased contamination in recycling bins.

Mayor Sally Doyle attributed the cost to processing fees and said it will ultimately be passed on to ratepayers.

“Recycling properly means less cost and a more sustainable environment,” she said.

“With contamination rates at 18% in Southern Tasmania, we need to do better to protect both our environment and our wallets.”

An audit of kerbside recycling bins in the valley found the most common contaminants are plastic bags, bagged waste, clothing and long-life cartons.

Other problem items include food and food-soiled packaging, nappies and batteries.

Doyle said the council offers free recycling at all Huon Valley waste transfer stations, giving residents the opportunity to “save money by separating their waste” correctly.

“For now, we ask the community to take the following two simple actions,” she said.

“Leave recycling loose – do not use bin bags. If in doubt, leave it out.”
