A young boy has died in hospital following a serious crash that injured a young woman and another child in the early hours of this morning.
The fatal crash on Bridport Road in Lefroy was reported to police shortly after 1:20am on Friday.
Acting Inspector Jason Jones said initial inquiries by crash investigators suggest the 24-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle before veering off the road and colliding with trees.
He said the woman was driving west in a black Holden Barina on Bridport Road, between Big Hill Road and Dalrymple Road, when she left the road.
“A community member who was not involved in the crash was asked to provide assistance before emergency services arrived and took the two injured children to the George Town Hospital,” Jones said.
“One of the children, a young boy, was sadly pronounced deceased a short time later.”
The other child and the woman received treatment for minor and non-life-threatening injuries at Launceston General Hospital.
“This incident will understandably have an impact on the local community, and our thoughts are with those affected,” he said.
“Anyone needing support is encouraged to contact A Tasmanian Lifeline on 1800 98 44 34, this service is available from 8am-8pm, seven days a week.”
