Tasmania’s cabinet has a new face, with former Sorell Mayor Kerry Vincent stepping into the roles of Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Local Government.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff welcomed Vincent to the team on Sunday, expressing confidence in his abilities despite the newcomer’s lack of ministerial experience.
“I had no ministerial experience in 2014 either. And we’ve all got to start somewhere,” Rockliff said.
He pointed to Vincent’s role in the “transformation” of Sorell, which included the delivery of “generational infrastructure” through partnerships with local, state and federal governments.
“What I see in Kerry is a very genuine and diligent person that loves his community,” Rockliff said.
“Kerry has got key connections right across Tasmania … [which] points to a wealth of experience.”
“What you’ll see in Kerry is someone that will embrace the opportunity and use his experience in life and small business right across Tasmania to add value to his portfolio responsibilities.”
Labor’s Josh Willie said Vincent had a “great reputation” as mayor “for getting things done”.
“I think that’s probably a good appointment in terms of the broader cabinet,” Willie said.
“It’ll be interesting to see whether [he], with a lack of experience in the Parliament, can get things done.”
Vincent will be tasked with overseeing major infrastructure projects, including the Bridgewater Bridge, as well as supporting local councils across the state.
