Tasmanian-born Queen Mary of Denmark has stepped down from her patronage of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation after 19 years.

The change follows a reassessment of existing royal patronages after Mary assumed the title of Queen in January.

The Foundation expressed gratitude to the Tasmanian-Dane for her nearly two decades of “wonderful support, kindness and inspiration” last week.

“We are incredibly grateful to Her Majesty Queen Mary, for her support since 2005 as our International Patron at the Foundation,” founding patron Walter Mikac said.

“Her dedication … during this time has been instrumental in raising awareness of our work and making a positive impact on the lives of children and young people.”

“Queen Mary’s compassion and generosity inspires us all, and we have been truly honoured to have her support in helping create a safer world for children.”

Earlier this year, the Tasmanian Government donated $10,000 to the Foundation, which was set up in memory of two young girls killed in the Port Arthur massacre, as a gift to Mary on her coronation.

“Born and raised in Hobart, Crown Princess Mary epitomises what it means to be Tasmanian. Humble, hard-working and quietly pursuing the extraordinary,” Minister Michael Ferguson said in January.

“A Taroona High, Hobart College and University of Tasmania graduate, Crown Princess Mary is one of the most accomplished women in the world.”

In addition to the donation, Tasmania also sent the King and Queen of Denmark a handmade Huon Pine occasional table by Rex Heathcote.
