Glenorchy residents fed up with wallabies and possums defecating on their footpaths have asked the local council to get the animals doing their business elsewhere.

A concerned resident from the Wariga Road and Heysen, Lever and Whitbread Courts area said the animals are ‘infringing on the amenity’ of their neighbourhood.

The local asked the Glenorchy City Council “what responsibility” it takes for the native wildlife inhabiting nearby reserves and “what control strategies” it can implement.

In response, the council said most native wildlife is protected in Tasmania under the Wildlife Regulations 1999 of the Nature Conservation Act 2002.

Glenorchy City Council say they have no plans to control local wildlife in the area

“Council does not have any plans to control or remove these animals,” their answer read.

The regulations prohibit the taking, killing, injuring, harassing or disturbing of wildlife, as well as damaging or destroying their habitats.
