Tasmania Police have confirmed they are searching for a man suspected of attempting to lure a child into his van in Bridgewater on Monday morning.

The incident, which occurred around 9:45am on the first day of Term 2, has prompted police to remind parents about the dangers posed by strangers.

The investigation was launched following concerns raised by family members of the young boy, who said he was “almost taken” by the man driving a van with tinted windows and a white rear window.

They described the man as being in his early 30s to mid-40s, with blonde hair, dressed in black, wearing red shoes, black sunglasses and sporting a flower tattoo on his right arm.

In a statement to Pulse, a police spokesperson said the child reported that they “did not know the man” who was driving the vehicle.

They encouraged parents to talk to their children about personal safety, including walking with friends, being aware of their surroundings and never going anywhere with a stranger.

Children should also be instructed to promptly report any suspicious behaviour to a parent, teacher or the police.

“Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au – quote ESCAD 89-29042024,” police said.
