The mayors of four Greater Hobart councils are looking for $26 million from the Tasmanian Government to expand the River Derwent ferry service.

Hobart’s Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds, Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley, Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas and Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt have joined forces in calling for $20 million to build ferry terminals at Howrah Point, Kingston Beach and Regatta Point.

The mayors are also looking for $6 million to complete the redevelopment of the existing Bellerive ferry terminal.

So far, the councils have already secured $20 million in funding from the Australian Government for new terminals at Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay and Wilkinsons Point.

“While $26 million is a significant investment, an expanded ferry network will deliver broad economic and social benefits,” Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“Both in the immediate term through direct job opportunities and in the long term through infrastructure improvements, enhanced productivity and improved social connectivity.”

Reynolds said the mayors also want to work with the government to transition to a “zero emission” ferry service.

Glenorchy Mayor Bec Thomas said the “biggest winners of this investment” would be local residents, who would have more transportation options to navigate the city.

“Given ongoing pressures on our roads and buses, growing the ferry network will improve the commuter experience for all Greater Hobart residents in a cost effective way,” she said.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson has welcomed the submission and said it builds on the positive reaction to the Derwent Ferry trial.

The exisiting ferry service between the Hobart waterfront and Bellerive recently reached a 300,000-passenger milestone.
