Search underway for young Tasmanian man missing near Frenchmans Cap

Update – 4:45pm: The body of a missing young Tasmanian bushwalker has been recovered this morning after an extensive search.

The body of the 28-year-old Hobart man was found by crews from Ambulance Tasmania and the State Emergency Service on Thursday afternoon.

He had reportedly slipped and fallen while walking the track on Wednesday, with other walkers raising concerns as a result.

Police said the man’s family had been notified and thanked the other walkers for their assistance.

Earlier: Authorities are searching for a young man from Hobart is missing after he failed to return to his campsite in the Tasmanian wilderness on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was last seen starting the final ascent of Frenchmans Cap at 7:30am on Wednesday 28 May.

He told other walkers that he intended to walk to the summit and return to the lake that day.

However, he did not return to his campsite, prompting the walkers to report their concerns to police on 31 May.

Acting Sergeant Stephen Barrow said a search and rescue team had walked into the area on Friday night.

“We are very concerned for the safety of the missing walker and are hoping that he is quickly found,” he said.

“I pass on my thanks to the walkers who reported this to police and assisted with valuable information.”

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is also assisting with the search.
