Tasmanians are being warned to prepare for damaging winds across the state on Friday, with gusts of up to 100km/h expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning, particularly for King Island, the Furneaux Islands and coastal areas, where winds are expected to be even stronger.

“A vigorous northwesterly flow is developing from the west ahead of an approaching trough,” the BOM said.

“Strong northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60km/h with damaging wind gusts around 100km/h are developing during Friday morning as a deep low pressure system is passing to the south of the state with a cold front that is affecting Tasmania.”

Winds are forecast to ease below warning thresholds by Friday night.
