SATURDAY 11AM: Fallen trees have caused several power outages across Northern Tasmania this morning.

Power remains off for many around the Bellingham and Weymouth areas and will stay that way until Saturday afternoon, TasNetworks say.

Near Devonport, The Latrobe Council have reduced Moorland Beach road to a single lane due to a tree of ‘significant size’ falling across it.

SATURDAY 8AM: Hundreds are without power in Tasmania’s north and north-west this morning after strong winds hit the area overnight.

TasNetworks say Sisters Creek was the worst affected area, with ‘long delays’ to be expected before power is restored.

Residents in Latrobe, Elizabeth Town, Nook and North Motton can expect their power to be restored on Saturday afternoon.

FRIDAY: The BOM are warning residents in Tasmania’s north to be prepared for severe weather as a vigorous northwesterly flow heads towards the state.

Wind gusts of around 110 km/h with heavy showers and thunderstorms are possible for the Devonport, Burnie, Currie, Smithton, Scottsdale and Whitemark areas from later this afternoon.

A surf warning is also current for Tasmania’s north-east, with winds associated with a deep low pressure system generating large and potentially damaging surf for parts of the Whitemark and Bridpord coast and Furneaux Islands.

“Heavy surf which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is possible for the north coast east of Low Head and west-facing coasts of the Furneaux Islands from early Saturday morning,” the BOM say.

“Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.”

“Sea levels will also be elevated near or slightly above the normal high tide level during early morning high tides on Saturday. These may further contribute to coastal erosion and inundation of low-lying areas.”

Conditions are expected to ease around Saturday afternoon, but may continue through Saturday evening.
