The City of Hobart has set fire to a section of the Queens Domain as part of its annual fuel reduction burn program ahead of summer.
The first controlled burn of Spring is visible from across the city and is being undertaken by council fire crews to minimise bushfire risk.
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said similar burns will soon be carried out at Bicentennial Park and Knocklofty Reserve.
“Hobart is susceptible to bushfires and unfortunately climate change is increasing this risk with more extreme fire weather days becoming much more common,” she said.
“This means more of us need to be aware of the bushfire risks to our homes even if we don’t live right next to bushland.”
The Lord Mayor said deliberately lighting the blaze provides protection for homes close to the Domain and nearby suburbs by reducing the amount of flammable material in the bushland park.
The council is asking residents to be aware of the burns and to take precautions if affected by smoke.
