Parts of Tasmania’s Central Highlands have been blanketed in snow overnight as a cold front brings ‘feels like’ temperatures of -8.1°C to the Liawenee area.
Locals have shared photos from around the Highlands region showing a thick layer of white snow covering the ground, with authorities warning of more wintry weather to come.
Elsewhere in the state, areas have been battered by destructive rain and winds, with more than 35,000 properties without power.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says a vigorous west to southwesterly airstream is moving across the island state in the wake of the cold front.
“Cool southwesterly winds will persist through today, ahead of ridge crossing Tasmania during the day Tuesday,” the BOM said.
“A warm front will arrive late Tuesday and warmer northwesterly winds continue after the front until at least Thursday evening.”
The forecast for the rest of Monday predicts rain breaking up to showers during the day and mostly easing to the west, central parts and far south in the evening.
Snow is expected to fall down to 400 metres and possible small hail around the west and south, while strong and gusty west to northwesterly winds are forecast to shift strong and gusty west to southwesterly during the morning.
On Tuesday, light showers are predicted for the west and snow falling down to 700 metres, with west to southwesterly winds tending west to northwesterly during the afternoon.
