The current 60km/h speed limit through the West Coast town of Zeehan will be slashed by 10km/h in the coming weeks.
This decision, which has been approved by the Commissioner for Transport, will apply to a 2.62-kilometre section of the Zeehan Highway that passes through the town centre, stretching from the south of Trial Harbour Road to Packer Street.
“The decision is based on the high level of interaction between traffic and pedestrians, including vulnerable road users visiting community facilities along the Zeehan main street, such as the Post Office, the RSL and the Zeehan Primary School,” the commissioner said.
“The road is also used by a high number of heavy vehicles.”
The commissioner expects the lower speed limit to “reduce the risk of crashes within the town” by giving both drivers and pedestrians “extra time to react”.
“It will have a minimal impact on travel time and will improve safety for all road users.”
The speed limit revision was initiated in response to a request made by the West Coast Council on behalf of the local community.
The changed speed limit will come into effect sometime between late November to early December.
