‘Storms and lightning’: Tasmanian flights hit by Melbourne weather delays

Severe weather conditions at Melbourne Airport have significantly affected numerous flights travelling to and from Tasmania this afternoon.

Much of the city is currently under a severe thunderstorm warning, with the BOM saying damaging winds and large hailstones are likely.

Several flights scheduled to depart from the airport remain grounded, while others have been stuck in holding patterns for nearly an hour.

Melbourne Airport officials say that while the airport remains open, safety precautions are being implemented.

“This includes slowing down runway and apron usage if there is lightning within 5 nautical miles of the airport,” they said.

“If you are travelling, please check any delays in departure time with your airline and take care on the roads.”
