Strong winds blow roof off Hobart business, Harrington Street blocked to traffic

Strong winds have blown the roof off a building on Harrington Street in the Hobart CBD overnight.

One lane of the road between Bathurst and Melville streets is currently blocked, with a substantial amount of roofing iron covering the roadway.

Crews from the the Hobart City Council are on-site cleaning the area and have asked motorists and pedestrians to stay away.

“Please avoid this area this morning if possible, we are diverting pedestrians away from the block,” the council said.

Authorities are urging motorists to take care on the roads, as more gusty winds are forecast for today.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting damaging wind gusts of around 100km/h in the lower elevation areas southwest of Hobart and the Tasman Peninsula today.

Gusts in excess of 110km/h are possible over the higher peaks of the southwest and Western Tiers.

Overnight, kununyi/Mt Wellington recorded a 137km/h wind gust at 4am, with Cape Bruny measuring a 100km/h gust at 2am.
