A fundraising effort has been launched to support the grieving Hobart family of a newborn baby who tragically lost his life following an alleged serious assault.

10-month-old Khaylan Shayne Butler passed away at the Royal Hobart Hospital on Sunday after he was allegedly shaken and dropped into his cot during the early hours of Friday morning.

Daniel John Ridgers, 25, has been charged with murder in connection to the incident and is scheduled to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

“The loss of Khaylan has been sudden and unexpected for all those who knew him,” Brianna Jeanneret wrote on the GoFundMe page she created to support the family.

“At 10 months old, Khaylan had quite the impact on everybody. Never would you have met a happier baby, whose giggles gifted joy to all those he was close to.”

“We thank everyone who has offered our family kind words and support during this incredibly difficult time.”

As of the time of writing, over $5,300 has been raised in less than 24 hours to assist the family in making Khaylan’s service “as worry free as possible”.

Jeanneret said a date for his service is yet to be confirmed.
