Tasmanians have been treated to another display of the Southern Lights this month, with social media buzzing with photos capturing the surprise appearance of the Aurora Australis on Wednesday morning.

However, this is not the only celestial event to hit Tasmania this week, with a large meteor shower expected to grace the state’s skies during the early hours of both Thursday and Friday.

The Aurora Australis lights, a natural phenomenon, occur when solar winds collide with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. This interaction results in the emission of bright, vivid colors that light up the night sky.

Photographer Andrew Wratten was on Bruny Island when the Aurora burst to life at around 12:40am.

“I was about to call it a night and then suddenly, boom,” he wrote online, adding that it wasn’t quite bright enough to be seen by the naked eye.

The Aurora was also sighted at other locations, including Port Arthur, South Arm and Oatlands.
