The Tasman Bridge will be illuminated in red and white on Sunday night as Hobart-born Princess Mary ascends to the throne as Queen of Denmark.
Hailing from Taroona, Mary Donaldson will soon become the first Australian-born Queen of a European monarchy.
The Tasmanian law graduate will be crowned Queen Consort of Denmark alongside her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, following Queen Margrethe’s abdication.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said it was “not every day” that a Tasmanian becomes a Queen.
“Princess Mary is a wonderful ambassador for Tasmania,” Rockliff said.
“With her demonstrated humility, grace and kindness I am sure Crown Princess Mary will be embraced as Queen alongside her husband, King Frederik once Proclaimed.”
“I look forward to watching the next generation, and Tasmania’s own born Queen lead Denmark’s future. We are so proud.”
The royal household says Jane Stephens, Mary’s eldest sister and godmother to her eldest son, Prince Christian, will be in Copenhagen for the occasion – however her father would remain in Tasmania.
Stephens, who works as a pharmacist in Hobart, has always shared a close bond with her youngest sister, having served as a bridesmaid at her wedding 20 years ago.
Both attended Taroona High School, Hobart College and the University of Tasmania.
Leading up to Mary’s 50th birthday celebrations in 2022, Stephens said that, despite her sister’s numerous commitments “there is always time for family and fun”.
“Mary has embraced her role as Crown Princess with dignity and grace, earning the admiration and respect of people all over the world. Our mother would have been bursting with love and pride,” she said at the time.
“I am enormously proud of my sister. Her passion and drive has brought causes that are close to her heart into the spotlight which I’m sure will make a difference in our world.”
