Two water-bombing aircraft have been returned to the mainland after their contract with the Tasmania Fire Service ended.

The fire service had initially contracted 15 aircraft for the summer season through the National Aerial Firefighting Centre, leaving them with 13 aircraft currently in operation.

Both VH-XAT and VH-XAJ were flown back to Scampton Airfield in New South Wales via Wagga Wagga on Friday.

The fire service says that despite the reduction in aircraft, firefighting capabilities across the state remain robust as further days of high fire danger are forecast.
