Hobart’s own Hugo Allison is set to take the national stage tonight as he makes his debut on the hit television singing contest “The Voice” at 7:30.
The 18-year-old student from The Hutchins School, who is already an accomplished competitive sailor, will now try to win the hearts of Australia with his voice.
Having taken singing lessons for over 10 years, Hugo says his style ‘leans more towards pop’, drawing inspiration from artists like Lewis Capaldi and Guy Sebastian.
Despite his passion for singing, he says the choice to audition for The Voice wasn’t an easy one.
“It was my singing teacher that gave me a nudge to audition for it, and I was kind of hesitant about it,” Hugo told ABC Radio.
Navigating through a rigorous selection process that saw over 10,000 applicants, Hugo made it to the blind auditions, a stage only 87 reached.
The process involved six Zoom calls with the show’s directors.
Despite the challenging experience of singing over Zoom, especially being based in Tasmania, Hugo managed to impress the selectors.
Preparing for his stage performance was nerve-wracking, he says.
As part of the preparation, Hugo underwent a styling process and was coached by one of the show’s music instructors.
Though Hugo says he he felt that the ‘nerves got the better of him’, the chance to receive feedback from legends like Guy Sebastian and Jessica Mauboy is something he considers ‘invaluable’.
Hugo will make his debut when The Voice airs tonight at 7:30 on Channel Seven.
