Branxholm locals have unearthed a ‘mysterious’ time capsule from the 1980s – 60 years ahead of schedule.
Buried 40 years ago as part of the town’s centenary celebrations in 1983, the time capsule contained various photographs and books from bygone years.
Originally intended to remain buried until October 1, 2083, the locals confessed they simply ‘couldn’t help themselves’.
After a three-week search to locate the long-forgotten capsule, the community rallied together to crack it open on Saturday afternoon.
“We had lots of stories of where to look for it,” Branxholm Progress President Alison Barrett told 7 Tasmania.
“We were told on the right side of the rock, could have been under the rock.”
“Eventually we tried the left side and found it.”
While the contents had faded from memory, a piece of cardboard surfaced bearing signatures from when the capsule was sealed in the 1980s.
The community plans to re-bury the capsule for the decades to come after Saturday’s sneak peek.
