The preferred location for a new $4 million pier in Bridport has been announced following extensive community consultation and site assessments.
Croquet Lawn Beach was chosen as the ideal spot for the 126-metre pier.
Over 400 submissions were received during the consultation period, with the Croquet Lawn Beach site gaining support from the community, Dorset Council, Bridport Pier Group and MAST.
Engineering advice on coastal processes, bathymetry and wave climate also deemed the location suitable, confirming its ability to withstand potential storms and accommodate appropriate land-based infrastructure and access requirements.
The pier is expected to provide additional capacity for recreation and tourism vessels, creating a ‘central focus’ for tourism in Bridport and becoming a popular summer destination.
“We know locals and beachgoers have missed having a pier so the confirmation of the pier’s location will be welcome news to all of those in the community,” local MP Simon Wood said.
“For the people in the town, this pier has been a long time coming and I cannot wait to see this become a reality.”
Site assessments have commenced and a development application is expected to be submitted in late 2024.
Approximately $4 million has been allocated for the approvals, design and construction of the new pier.
