A north-west Tasmanian council has unveiled the state’s first Red Bench to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The Central Coast Council, in partnership with Tasmania Police and the Red Rose Foundation, launched the bench on Reibey Street in Ulverstone on Wednesday.

The existing bench was painted bright ‘Rose Red’ and now features a plaque on the side with information about the foundation’s key messages on domestic violence awareness and prevention.

Mayor Cheryl Fuller said placing the first Red Bench in an “iconic location” was important to the council to gain as much attention from passersby as possible.

“The bench seat outside Olivers in Reibey Street was a perfect fit, as many community members pass by there on a daily basis,” she said.

“This is a topic close to many of our hearts and council hopes that through the Red Bench project, it will lead to our community having these conversations more.”

Three additional red benches are planned throughout the council area in Leith, Sulphur Creek and Penguin.

The unveiling came as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the government would invest $925m over five years to permanently establish a Leaving Violence program.
