The Mayor of the Derwent Valley has slammed ‘unskilled’ thieves who stole over $1,000 worth of conifer trees from a northern suburbs park.

Michelle Dracoulis said she was left “disappointed” after waking up to the news that 12 established trees had been ripped from Granton Park near the Bridgewater Bridge.

“These conifers were planted as part of a beautification process that council is undertaking to improve this popular area,” she said.

“They were establishing well and were purchased at a cost of $99 each, this theft leaving ratepayers $1,188 out of pocket.”

Dracoulis said the thieves had “little chance” of successfully replanting the trees as their roots had been damaged during the ordeal.

“Sadly the thieves are not skilled gardeners, and these trees have had their roots ripped during the theft,” she said.

“I also feel for our outdoors crew who work so hard to create beautiful spaces for us all.”

“If you have information about this crime or if you notice dodgy tree sales, please contact Tasmania Police.”
