A video showing a massive felled native tree, believed to be a Eucalyptus regnans, being transported on a truck in Tasmania’s Florentine Valley has been labelled ‘shameful’ and an ‘utter environmental travesty’.

This tree is one of Australia’s tallest varieties and has an immense girth that almost fills the entire truck.

Former Greens leader and conservationist Bob Brown has slammed the tree’s removal and pleaded with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to end native forest logging.

Brown said the ‘death of the tree was unnecessary and harmful to the environment’.

“Just days ago this wonder of nature, centuries old but still unimaginable strong and youthful, was alive and a natural wonder.”

“Despite what we see on that truck, most of the tree remains on the forest floor and will be incinerated by Forestry Tasmania, putting tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air.”

“And with it has gone the birds, mammals and other wildlife which for centuries have lived in and around that tree.”

“It’s destruction is despicable official vandalism.”

The tree is understood to have been cut down by Sustainable Timber Tasmania for safety reasons.
