A major intersection in Tasmania’s south that has been the site of multiple crashes will be upgraded with the help of $100 million in joint state and federal funding.
The Mornington roundabout off the Tasman Highway will be replaced with traffic lights under a multi-stage plan that also includes new ramps connecting the highway with Gordons Hill Road.
The project, which is being funded by $80 million from the federal government and $20 million from the state government, is aiming to improve road safety and traffic flow in the area.
Work will begin with the construction of ramps to connect Gordons Hill Road with the Tasman Highway, allowing vehicles smoother access to Rosny from the highway and reducing traffic volumes at the roundabout.
“The Mornington roundabout is a headache for local residents, causing congestion and safety concerns, which is why we invested an additional $50 million in our recent Budget to get this fixed,” Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said.
“This is one of many priority projects we are working closely on with the Tasmanian Government to make the everyday lives of locals that little bit easier.”
Once the ramps are complete, other improvements near the roundabout will begin, including moving the off-ramp from the Tasman Highway to South Arm Highway onto Cambridge Road and reconfiguring the Mornington Road intersection with South Arm Highway.
“This set of projects will improve safety and traffic flow for all those who travel through the Mornington area and beyond,” Tasmanian Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent said.
“Through our consultation process we heard access to and from Mornington Road can be difficult. Moving this intersection will help with the flow of traffic through this area.”
The upgrades will also include safer access to bus stops by improving crossing points for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities.
