A tragic incident between a car and a pedestrian has claimed the life of a young boy outside of a Hobart school.

The 12-year-old boy sadly passed away on Main Road in Moonah, just outside Cosgrove High School, shortly after 3pm on Friday.

Police believe he was hit by a vehicle exiting the school grounds, having just finished school for the day.

“There was a group of children walking down the footpath and someone was driving out of Cosgrove High, where a collision occurred,” Inspector Jon Cooper from Tasmania Police said.

“[The incident] occurred directly in front of other students … [This is] very distressing for all those concerned, there were a lot of people in the area at the time.”

Despite attempts by first responders, the boy passed away at the scene.

Crash investigators spent several hours combing over the collision site on Friday afternoon and are “still piecing everything together”.

“It was a very difficult scene,” Coopers said, adding that the emergency respondents “worked frantically to try and save the young boy’s life”.

The driver of the vehicle, whose age and identity have not been confirmed, was taken to the hospital for mandatory testing and is said to be “deeply shocked and concerned”.

Cooper said police had spoken to the boy’s heartbroken parents.

“Any incident like this is devastating for all those concerned, especially family, friends, colleagues and all the emergency services workers that attend these incidents,” he said.

“We will be offering counselling to all the emergency service workers involved and I understand the school will be offering counselling to all the children involved.”
