12-year-old critical after being hit by car on East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater

A 12-year-old girl is fighting for her life after being struck by a vehicle on the East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater.

The incident occurred around 6:15pm on Tuesday when the girl reportedly “ran into the path” of a car while attempting to cross the highway.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene, with paramedics rushing the young victim to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle, a grey Toyota Kluger, underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing following the collision.

Authorities are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who may have captured the incident on dash cam.

Earlier: The East Derwent Highway at Bridgewater has been closed tonight after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

Police say the incident occurred prior to 7pm on Tuesday between Paice Street and Gage Road.

A large number of emergency service vehicles and crash investigators are on the scene.

“It is likely the highway will be shut for a number of hours whilst the investigation is undertaken,” police said.
