Junction upgrades, wider roads and new overtaking lanes are coming to the Tasman Highway along the east coast.

The $125 million joint initiative between state and federal governments began this month and will be delivered in three separate packages.

The first phase focuses on an 11km section between Bicheno and Coles Bay Road.

Improvements will include a new Hobart-bound overtaking lane, along with road widening and safety realignments at several high-risk corners.

Later this year, work is expected to begin on a 1.3km section north of Triabunna, though designs for this segment have not yet been finalised.

Early planning is also underway for enhancements to a 13km stretch between Pontypool and Rocky Hills, which will include two new overtaking lanes.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said the federal government made a $100 million contribution as part of a national infrastructure program.

“We will continue to partner with the Tasmanian Government to deliver critical road infrastructure upgrades Tasmanians need and deserve,” she said.

Tasmanian Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent said the upgrades will provide a “safer and smoother experience” along the Great Eastern Drive.

“The highway has had several upgrades under this project since 2018, prioritising areas that improve safety and drive increased tourism to the many iconic and regional locations on the state’s east coast,” he said.
