The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania has officially launched the 2025 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, with organisers celebrating the milestone 80th running of the iconic Boxing Day event.
CYCA Commodore Dr Sam Haynes joined RYCT Commodore Nick Hutton at the Tasmanian launch ceremony in Hobart, where they honoured the volunteers whose efforts help make the 628 nautical mile race possible.
He said the dedication and tireless commitment of their volunteers have contributed to the ongoing success of the race, presenting shirts to this year’s volunteer team.
Tourism Minister Jane Howlett said the race is significant for Tasmania’s summer events calendar.

“The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has been drawing crowds since 1945 and it’s wonderful to see the Hobart waterfront come alive with spectators each summer,” Howlett said.
“Many competitors from around the world enjoy the challenge of this unique ocean yacht race and we see a great uptake of competitors year after year.”

The state government has provided a total of $300,000 through Events Tasmania to support the event from 2023 to 2025.
The 2025 fleet will feature 142 boats, making it the second-biggest fleet this century, with only the 75th anniversary event in 2019 attracting more vessels.
The international contingent includes 17 boats from countries such as Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United States.
13 Tasmanian entries will join the race.

11 female skippers will also participate this year, including the all-female crew aboard First Light.
The race will begin on Boxing Day and will be broadcast on Channel Nine and YouTube.
