Hobart’s Goods Shed stands in the way of the proposed Macquarie Point stadium and its fate could be influenced by an application to consider the 1915 railway building for permanent heritage listing.

The Tasmanian Heritage Council assessed the century-old structure during a Wednesday night meeting and are believed to have started the process for its heritage listing.

Pulse understands that it has been provisionally listed on the register.

The site has previously been unsuccessfully nominated for heritage status in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

If the building is officially listed as a heritage site, it will be protected from demolition or relocation.

The Goods Shed is currently owned by Macquarie Point Development Corporation and is home to Hobart Brewing Co, as well as being a popular venue for music and events.

MPDC now has 21 days to respond before public submissions can be made and the Heritage council will then decide whether to make the listing final.

Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the government would consider the council’s decision but remains committed to the stadium project.

“We’re committed, clearly, to the Macquarie Point precinct plan. We’ll take interest in what the Heritage Council say,” he said.

“We’ll wait for the final outcome and make the appropriate decisions. We’re committed to that significant investment of the stadium.”
