A developer is banking on the appeal of Tasmania’s east coast with plans for a new apartment and retail complex in the historic fishing town of Triabunna.
Caccavo Group has lodged a proposal to transform the former Glamorgan Spring Bay Council chambers into 20 residential apartments, together with a cellar door, bakery and cafe overlooking the marina.
The waterfront project at 38 Vicary Street would be among the most significant recent private investments in the township, which is the gateway to Maria Island National Park.
Planning documents show the site covers more than 8,000 square metres, with a building footprint of about 2,300 square metres and includes 64 car parks.

The design blends residential suites within the heritage-listed council building and new waterfront villas aimed at the tourism market.
Triabunna, with a permanent population of just 900, has become a drawcard for visitors chasing authentic Tasmanian experiences, with numbers swelling during peak tourism periods.

The development requires approval across multiple council zones, with some components extending onto Crown land.
State government consent has already been secured for those portions of the project.
Council initially flagged concerns about parking provision and coastal hazard management before the applicant provided additional technical assessments.
Public consultation is open until early October, after which council will make a decision.

If approved, Caccavo Group hopes to break ground next year.
Caccavo recently completed a nearby subdivision that will add 27 new homes to Triabunna, not far from the proposed marina precinct.
