A $28 million sports and recreation centre for Hobart’s northern suburbs has moved a step closer to reality, with the state government releasing tenders for construction.
The Glenorchy Sports Centre will be built at Claremont College, providing four indoor courts and facilities designed to accommodate netball, basketball, futsal, volleyball and wheelchair sports.
Sport Minister Nick Duigan said the project represented a significant investment in community infrastructure.
“The Glenorchy Sports Centre will be a fantastic community hub, providing fit-for-purpose facilities that encourage participation, inclusion and connection,” he said.
The centre will feature a show court with seating for 300 spectators, with total capacity reaching 600 when portable seating is included.

Modern changerooms, parent and sensory rooms, and a registered Changing Places facility will cater for people with disabilities.
Three multipurpose meeting spaces will provide areas for club activities and community events with 68 car parks.
Duigan said the facility would serve the community for decades.
“This investment demonstrates our commitment to supporting grassroots sport, creating opportunities for local communities and delivering high-quality infrastructure for the future,” he said.
“The Glenorchy Sports Centre is set to be a game-changer for our local sports scene and will serve the community for decades to come.”

The project forms part of broader infrastructure spending across Tasmania, including Launceston’s Northern Suburbs Community Recreation Hub and high-performance centres at Kingston for the JackJumpers and Tasmania Devils.
Tender submissions close on December 17, with construction expected to begin early next year.
The centre is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
