The Selfs Point Sewerage Transformation Project has reached a significant construction milestone with the pouring of more than 5,800 concrete piles at the New Town site.

The $314 million project, jointly funded by the Tasmanian Government and TasWater, is on track for completion in late 2026 and aims to future-proof Hobart’s sewerage infrastructure while delivering environmental benefits.

“These types of major projects is exactly what Tasmania needs to future-proof the State, safeguard the environment and create jobs and economic benefits for Tasmanians today,” Treasurer Guy Barnett said during a site visit.

The upgrades will immediately unlock capacity for 8,000 new homes in Greater Hobart, with potential for an additional 20,000 homes in the future.

Beyond housing, the project is promising significant environmental improvements by removing 132 tonnes of nitrogen and phosphorus from the Derwent River.

Tony Wilmott, General Manager of Project Delivery at TasWater, highlighted the extensive planning behind the development.

“This project will remove around 50 per cent of our loading on the river,” Wilmott said.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for Hobart and greater Hobart and also the people that live in and around the Derwent.”

The economic impact is expected to be substantial, supporting 3,420 direct and indirect jobs and generating $1.1 billion in economic activity for Tasmania.

Planning for the transformation began in 2016, with TasWater examining multiple potential locations before selecting the Selfs Point site.

“We’re confident that we have the right answers, we’re confident that we have the right price and we’re aiming to be on time and on budget,” Wilmott added.

The project will create space around Macquarie Point for the construction of a new multipurpose stadium.
