Two people have been charged with manslaughter after a man passed away following an alleged assault in Hobart’s CBD.
Two men, aged 31 and 20, allegedly physically assaulted the man and knocked him to the ground in the Elizabeth Street Mall around 9pm on Tuesday.
The 66-year-old Hobart man passed away as a result of his injuries.
“Everyone has the right to be safe in our public places and no act of violence will be tolerated,” said Detective Inspector David Gill.

The charged men have been detained in custody and will appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.
Several bystanders, including a man later identified as Gary, came to the victim’s assistance immediately following the attack.

In a comment on a Pulse Tasmania article, the victim’s granddaughter thanked the good samaritan for his efforts.
“All I can say is thank you Gary for helping my grandpa, even though he may have passed from this assault, you did everything you could,” she wrote.
Investigators from the South East Criminal Investigation Branch are appealing for witnesses to help piece together the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
