Smart power meters have been rolled out to over 70% of Tasmanian electricity customers, with the remaining 30% slated to transition by the end of 2026.
Smart meters, or advanced meters, enable power companies to remotely monitor usage statistics and provide accurate data to homeowners and businesses through mobile apps and websites.
Energy and Renewables Minister Nick Duigan said one in three Tasmanian households are now using the ‘aurora+’ app to better understand and control their energy expenses.
“This information is available to anyone with an Advanced meter installed on an eligible tariff and importantly, there is no fee to use it,” he said.
“Being able to see how and when you’re using energy is powerful as it reinforces the necessary changes inside the home needed to bring down your energy usage and we’re excited that more than 80,000 are now taking advantage of aurora+.”
The majority of residential and small business customers in Tasmania are expected to have advanced meters installed by the end of 2024, aligning with the State Government’s commitment to complete the rollout by the end of 2026.
Aurora Energy CEO Nigel Clark said that following the success of the ‘aurora+’ app, the company is now introducing free electricity ‘Power Hours’.
“The first event (held over the weekend) was a raging success with more than 36,000 Tasmanians making the most of it and enjoying free electricity on Aurora Energy,” Clark said.
“Aurora+ customers can expect this to become an ongoing feature of using the digital channel. It’s our way of saying thanks for being with us and giving back.”
