Update – 2pm Saturday: Around 58mm of rain has fallen at Fingal since 9am.
Flash flooding has impacted some roads and paddocks in the area. Some local residents say water has been coming off the road and ‘flooding straight into their backyard’.
A severe thunderstorm warning remains for the Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of Western, North East, North West Coast and Central North Forecast Districts.
29 mm was recorded Cannells Hill near Huonville in 30 mins to 1:30 pm, 39 mm was recorded at Gowan Brea in the 30 mins to 1:20 pm and 34.6 mm was recorded at Monameta in the 1 hour to 10:09 am.
Earlier: A severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for parts of Tasmania’s North East and East Coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology says a trough is producing slow-moving thunderstorms capable of heavy rainfall in the northeast and east.
Thunderstorms are likely to produce rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.
Over 40mm of rain has already fallen at Fingal between 9am and 11am.
The Fingal Valley is expected to receive up to 80mm of rain throughout the day, which is expected to have a flow-on effect with low-lying areas and roads in the valley.
The State Emergency Service is advising people in the warning area to avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters and to seek shelter indoors.
They are also urging people to stay away from trees, avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm and to beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
