Around 100 parking spaces will be eliminated from Hobart’s Macquarie and Davey streets in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion and promote public transportation and more active commuting options.

The state government plans to begin the first stage of the project this month, which will include the installation of a separated bike lane on Davey St and an extension of the clearway on Macquarie St.

BlackCap Construction has recently been awarded a $1.8 million contract for the project, with an expected completion date of July 15.

The upcoming works will see the Macquarie St clearway extended, spanning from Gore Street to Molle Street.

The clearway will operate during the busiest hours on weekdays from 6:30am to 9:30am and 3:00pm to 6:00pm and will connect to the new fifth lane on the Southern Outlet.

The second phase of the project will involve the installation of new right-turn lanes on Barrack and Murray streets, shortened pedestrian crossings and the removal of additional parking spaces on Davey St to improve traffic flow.

According to State Growth, 93 parking spaces on Macquarie and Davey streets will be permanently removed as part of the project and an extra 24 parking spaces will be designated for the peak clearway on Macquarie Street.

Parking in side streets will be adjusted to allow for permits and encourage turnover, reducing the impact on residents and property owners.

The state government say a majority of the work will be undertaken at night or during off-peak travel times to minimise the impact on road users.
