August 11: Interstate bikies arrested in raid after Devonport assaults

Two interstate outlaw motorcycle gang members have been charged with affray and several counts of assault after an incident at Devonport McDonald’s last weekend.

Police executed a search warrant at a rural property near New Norfolk where a Tasmanian OMCG member lives around 6am on Friday.

During the search, two South Australian men aged 23 and 30, who have been actively avoiding police, were arrested.

They have since been charged and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court later today.

The Tasmanian man will also face charges after police located a quantity of drugs, gel blasters styled as real handguns and stolen property during the search.

Devonport CIB Detective Acting Inspector Alex Bonde said the arrests followed some “dedicated investigative work” undertaken by Tasmania Police.

“We have made it unequivocally clear we won’t tolerate the type of thuggish behaviour that occurred in Devonport last weekend, and we will do everything we can to hold those responsible to account,” he said.

“By helping these men avoid police apprehension, the OMCG has shown that it condones violence within our community.”

“Tasmania Police is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community members and we will continue to proactively target and disrupt OMCG activities.”

“We have also identified a third man reportedly involved in the assaults from the weekend, and we’re working with our interstate counterparts to ensure he is held to account for his actions”.

August 8: Six people ‘badly bashed’ by outlaw gang members in Devonport

Six people have been left injured after they were bashed by a group of interstate outlaw motorcycle gang members in Devonport on Sunday morning.

Police say three to four men approached two victims outside McDonald’s in Devonport CBD at around 1am.

The offenders then kicked one of the victims in the ribs and struck the other in the jaw.

After the initial attack, the gang members fled the scene in a ute with interstate plates before returning to the Rooke Street Mall about 20 minutes later, where the same two victims were present with their friends.

“The offenders then assaulted the two men again, as well as their friends, leaving six people with injuries,” a Police spokesperson said.

“Two people were knocked unconscious, and four of the six victims were taken to hospital with various injuries.”

The offenders, who were “quickly identified” as interstate OMCG members, fled the scene following the incident.

Western District Commander Stuart Wilkinson said the gang members were on notice.

“Anyone involved in Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, whether that be directly or indirectly, is not welcome in our community,” Commander Wilkinson said.

“Tasmania is a safe place, and we will not stand for the violence and sheer thuggery witnessed during these assaults on the weekend.”
